Abstract
This chapter presents the results of a detailed study of social mix and gentrification in the redeveloped (gentrified and socially mixed) neighbourhood of Partick, Glasgow, which questions the advocacy role of middle-class residents in helping to improve the fortunes of neighbourhoods. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research, it explores the reasons why the policy idea of encouraging middle-class residents into poorer neighbourhoods might not result in welfare gains for those poorer residents.

Abstract
