Twelve Secession or cohesion? Exploring the impact of gated communities
Abstract
This chapter examines the consequences for social cohesion of the increasing number of gated communities in England. An assessment of the evidence on the levels of community cohesion within such developments is provided. One section explores the broad social cohesion outcomes of locating gated communities in their wider neighbourhood contexts. A five-part typology of ‘host’ neighbourhoods in which gated communities may be situated is developed in the chapter. It is concluded that the processes of social secession which are evident in the arrival of gated communities needs a national government response that puts these forms of residential developments in a community cohesion and planning framework.
