Six Health inequality as a policy priority

Abstract

This chapter discusses recent policy developments in Great Britain aimed at tackling health inequalities, focusing on the significance of the performance management of delivery. It discusses the roles of National Health Service (NHS) and local-government and health-impact assessments in addressing health inequalities. The chapter also highlights the tension between targets and performance management on the one hand, and local responsiveness and autonomy on the other, when using the neighbourhood as a setting for intervention.
