Fourteen Testing urban forms: city, control and ‘urban violence’ in France

Abstract
This chapter talks about the conceptions of urban violence and includes a detailed account of the portrayal, marginalisatio, and subsequent cultural responses of young, excluded people. It describes the responses to city housing policy, as well as the problematisation and objectification of the residents’ behaviour of France’s Priority Urban Development Zones (ZUPs). These ZUPs are determined to mirror similar processes with UK council housing states. The chapter further argues that cities in France are slowly being characterised by spaces of control that are subject to surveillance, rather than by public spaces that act as locations for urban interaction.
