Abstract

This chapter presents the RePAST European project that served as a basis for information gathering and research used in this monograph. It explains the rationale behind the book and presents a theoretical and conceptual approach to the study of collective memory, conflict, troubled pasts and trauma in European societies. This chapter also describes the multidisciplinary approach to the study of memory and present the four topical foci in the monograph, namely official and oral history, journalistic and citizen-led media, political discourses and policies, and arts and culture.

In the end it explains different criteria for the selection of case studies and gives a brief description of troubled pasts in country cases that are further studied in each chapter.
