One Introduction: narratives of organising waste in the city
-
and
Abstract
The chapter describes how waste becomes both a narrative and a narrator of the society in which it is embedded, and how the socio-materiality of waste relates to the way we engage with the materiality of waste in the course of our everyday life. Then, the chapter introduces the four sections that set out the aim of this book: spaces, places and sites of waste in the city; global waste discourses and narratives shaping local practices; waste governance and management practices; and how civil society is responding and sometimes contesting waste policies, and what issues of environmental, economic and social injustice emerge from this struggle.
