The modern phase of Jewish spiritual development had its beginnings in the 19th century when social and legislative restrictions on Jewish communities in Germany and elsewhere were greatly relaxed. Starting with accounts of the early process of Jewish Emancipation, this series of essays by seven eminent scholars examines important aspects of the new orientations evolved in this crucial and formative period in modern Jewish intellectual history.
