Microstructural Characterization of Ballistic Damage in Dry Pressed Alumina Ceramics

Abstract

Alumina ceramics are one of readily available and cost-effective materials for ceramic-based ballistic applications. As impact velocity is most important parameter in armor design, ceramic microstructures have key role for better understanding of the ballistic penetration. Dry pressed alumina tiles bonded to fiberglass laminate backings have been tested in the ballistic experiments for low and high impact velocities. The microstructural changes and damage mechanisms have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Radial and conical types of cracks have been observed in the alumina ceramics tested. The damage mechanisms have changed in accordance with the impact velocity

Kurzfassung

Aluminiumoxidkeramiken gehören zu den leicht erhältlichen und kostengünstigen Materialien für ballistische Anwendungen auf Keramikbasis. Da die Aufprallgeschwindigkeit der wichtigste Parameter beim Entwerfen von Panzerungen ist, ist die Mikrostruktur von Keramiken zum besseren Verständnis der Penetration von Geschossen von besonders großer Bedeutung. Bei den ballistischen Experimenten wurden trocken gepresste Aluminiumoxidkacheln, die mit einer Rückplatte aus Fieberglaslaminat verbunden waren, bei geringen und hohen Aufprallgeschwindigkeiten getestet. Dabei wurden die mikrostrukturellen Änderungen und Schadensmechanismen durch Rasterelektronenmikroskopie (REM) charakterisiert. In dem untersuchten Aluminiumoxid wurden radiale und konische Rissarten beobachtet. Die Schadensmechanismen veränderten sich entsprechend der Aufprallgeschwindigkeit.

Huseyin S. Soykan BSc degree from Istanbul Technical University in 1993, PhD in 1999 for research on ceramics from University of Sakarya, Turkey. Assistant professor at Kocaeli University until 2004. 2004–2007 chief engineer R&D at Eregli Iron and Steel works Corp. Now with Marmara Recovery as a project director.

Yucel Gencer received his BSc degree from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey in 1990 and a PhD for research on creep from the University of Sheffield in UK in 2002. He joined staff at Gebze Yuksek Teknoloji Enstitisu in Turkey, made assistant professor in 2003, and teaching at this institute since then.
