Abstract

Massive cementite surface-layers can be prepared upon gaseous nitrocarburising of α-iron substrates, where the ammonia contained in the gas atmosphere suppresses the otherwise occurring metal dusting and sooting reactions. The growth kinetics and properties of such cementite layers have been reviewed, in particular in view of possible deliberate generation of such layers in the course of commercial heat-treatment processes.
