Nine Men Waiting for One More: The Psychology of the Minyan

Abstract
Engaging in prayer and holding positive attitudes toward religion are empirically associated with personal well-being, health, and relief of distress. Moving from the individual level to the group level, however, requires an additional stratum of analysis. Within this framework, the paper explores the Jewish requirement of the minyan, or prayer quorum, and employs selected, well-recognized psychological constructs such as social network, empowerment, self-esteem, social support, and the health benefits of religious activity to offer a theoretical explanation of how and why the minyan is so important and effective.
