Abstract

This study treats the tension between religion and sexuality, tradition and modernity, ethnicity and gender, and power and repression in contemporary Brazilian-Jewish prose fiction. Owing to the numerous contradictory social variables that cross and influence social and personal identities, often making them porous and ambiguous, this essay addresses social contradictions and conflicts via the theoretical lens of “intersectionality,” wherein the collision of ethnicity, prejudice, power, and sexuality frequently result in diverse forms of social and personal injustices as well as asymmetrical identities. With succinct analyses of four narratives by Brazilian writers of Jewish ascendency, the interpretations here illustrate the challenges confronting social characters who invariably collide with different perspectives and experiences as they construct their own identities. Given Brazil’s multicultural and multiethnic society, these authors ultimately question the viability of ever attaining sincere social congress.
