This book introduces the way languages are used in Japanese-English interlingual families in Japan and explains what factors influence their language choice, with the aim of arriving at a predictive model of language use. It also proposes a taxonomy of interlingual family types and a typological model of language use.

Masayo Yamamoto is Professor of Bilingualism Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University, Hyogo, Japan. Her previous books, in Japanese, are an introduction to the topic for general readers and a more detailed treatment for specialists. She also has edited books on bilingualism and educational topics. With her American husband, she has raised two bilingual children.
