The magnetic structure of α-MnMoO4

Abstract

Neutron powder diffraction data of α-MnMoO4 (space group C2/m) are presented, which were collected with the diffractometer DN5 at the CEN Grenoble at T = 50 K and between 13 K and 5.5 K. Below T = 15.3 K, α-MnMoO4 is antiferromagnetically ordered. The translational symmetry of the magnetic structure is described by a propagation vector (1,0, 1/2), i.e. the magnetic unit cell is a, b, 2c. The magnetic moments corresponding to the two nonequivalent crystallographic sites of the magnetic Mn ions in the unit cell of the crystal structure are aligned in the (0 1 0) plane. Magnetic moments belonging to different sites are canted by an angle of 9°. Within one site they are collinear. The angles between the moment directions and the α-axis are 67° and 58°, respectively.
