Synthesis and molecular structure of (oxalato)(2,4-hexanedionato)boron(III)

Abstract

The new organoboron compound (oxalato)(2,4-hexanedionato)boron(III), 1, has been synthesized by the reaction of boric acid with 2,4-hexanedione and oxalic acid. Crystals of 1 are trigonal, a = b = 9.008(5), c = 10.824(7) Å, α = β = 90°, γ = 120°, Z = 3, space group P31ϱc = 1.39 g cm−3. The structure was solved by direct methods and was refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to a R value of 0.054 for 1583 reflections with F > 3 · σ(F) (Rw = 0.048). The structure consists of discrete molecules containing tetrahedrally coordinated boron atoms with average B – O distances of 1.461(6) Å. The acetylacetonato moiety is consistent with the fully delocalized and symmetric description of the (acac) ligand, where acac ≙ [CH3COCHCOC2H5].
