The scaling of X-ray intensity data: on the calculation of |E| values

Abstract
The calculation of |E| values from X-ray intensity data is discussed, and illustrated by examples. The dependence of phasing by direct methods on ‘correct’ |E| values is noted, and certain recommendations are made in this context in the light of the results of this investigation.
