Abstract

The reaction of Dichlormonoxide with the metal chlorides NbCl5, TaCl5, ZrCl4 and HfCl4, respectively, solved in POCl3 leads to the compounds I—VII. According to their vibrational spectra (IR, Raman) the structures are assumed.

[NbOCl3 · POCl3]4 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with four tetrameric units per unit cell. The crystal structure was solved by x-ray diffraction methods (R = 5.9%, 2386 observed reflections). The structure consists of almost planar and square Nb4O4-eight membered-rings with alternately changing Nb—O bond lengths. The distorted octahedral environment of the Niobium atoms is completed by three terminal Cl-ligands and by the oxygen atom of a POCl3 solvate molecule.
