The crystal structure of In2ZnS4

Abstract

The compound In2ZnS4 crystallizes in soft plates and has a layer structure in the space group R3mC3v5; with N = 3, the dimensions of the triply primitive hexagonal cell are a = 3.850 and c = 37.06 Å. All atoms occupy positions a, (000, ⅓ ⅔ ⅔, ⅔ ⅓ ⅓) + 00z; if the origin is put halfway between two layers, the parameters z are: In0 .166, InT .937, Zn .396, SI .040, SII .294, SIII .459, SIV .872.

The structure may be described as a slightly distorted closest packing of the sulphur atoms, in which the nets perpendicular to the c axis form a sequence ABCACABCBCAB… with period 12. In0 occupies slightly compressed octahedral voids, whereas InT and Zn occupy somewhat enlarged tetrahedral voids; layers are composed of four sulphur nets and three interleaving cation nets.
