Abstract

The term ‘parenthetical’ is applied to an almost unlimited range of phenomena, which share but one common feature, namely their being used ‘parenthetically’. Syntactically, it is not quite clear how parentheticals are to be integrated into the overall sentence structure. Semantically, the question arises as to what kind of information is provided by parentheticals. Moreover, it is anything but clear what actually marks parentheticals as parentheticals. The present paper proposes to regard parentheticals as indices which convert the direction of reference and take the rest of the utterance as object. Parentheticals and their basic utterances are analysed as complex signs which integrate also non-actual utterances.
