Summary

The botanical name of Lemon Balm (Melissa) and most names for this old medicinal plant in Slavonic languages refer to beekeeping, bees and the production of honey: in antiquity and Middle Ages Lemon Balm was used as attractant and for healing insect bites. Soon the curative properties on heart and nervous system were also discovered. The names for Melissa in Bulgarian and in other Slavonic langues, if not derived from this botanical term, refer to the citrus flavour of the leaves, to the queen bee, the beehive and the beehive maker, to honey and the attracting of bees. But these popular names are also used for other labiates.
