Summary

Measurements have been made of the yields of 14 nuclides from the fission of natural thorium (232Th) induced by neutrons of 14.7 ± 0.2 MeV. A peak-to-valley yield ratio of 5.2 is found, with the yield at the maximum of the light peak measured as 6.50 ± 0.33%. The maxima of the light and heavy peaks fall respectively at masses 91 and 137, the peak width being 12.5 mass units.

The probability of symmetric fission is discussed in terms of a simple liquid drop model, and it is shown that, over the range from 227Ra to 240Pu, this quantity shows a systematic dependence on an available energy term deduced from the model.
