Abstract

In recent years J. L. Miller has argued extensively for the identification of Armā, an Egyptian commander known from the Hittite text KUB 19.15++ with Haremhab and built a new chronology of the Amarna period upon this identification (2007, 2008). This paper critically examines the proposed identification from a linguistic point of view: it discusses all possible phonetic interpretations of Armā and whether it can reflect the contemporary form of Haremhab. Linguistic arguments will show that the identification of these two names (and persons) and thus the suggested Amarna chronology is not possible.
