Abstract

The paper deals with the motif of the material’s martyrdom. Therefore common European narrations are taken into consideration, which tell about the torments of grain and flax during their processing. Futhermore the bilingual hittite-hurrian parable of copper and the blacksmith serves as an other source – a analogy picturing the several steps of producing ore to unwrought copper comparable to the suffering of grain and flax. On the basis of these and other instances the way of the motif’s tradition is discussed.
