Das Jahrhundert der Aufklärung prägt eine "Dialektik" von Sehen und Nicht-Sehen weit mehr, als es wirkungsgeschichtliche Verblendung bislang wahrhaben mochte. Der Visionär Swedenborg fasziniert (nicht nur) den jungen Kant, die "ägyptische" Freimaurerei Cagliostros feiert Triumphe. Geheimbünde und Geisterseherei gehören ebenso zur Aufklärung wie Mesmers Fehldeutung des "animalischen Magnetismus". Mehr als Schiller war Goethe berufen, zwischen Anschauung und Begriff zu vermitteln. Auf satirischen Kupferstichen erkennt er auch als erster die postrevolutionäre Wende Frankreichs.
