Georg Lorenz Bauer’s Biblische Moral des Alten Testaments: The First »Old Testament Ethics«?

Abstract
Georg Lorenz Bauer (1755–1806) is known for coining the term »historical-critical« and writing one of the first works of Old Testament theology, but he is hardly remembered for publishing what is arguably the first independent work of Old Testament ethics. His two-volume Biblische Moral des Alten Testaments (1803) still ranks among the most extensive publications on the subject. This article situates Bauer’s work within the history of OT ethics research, arguing that it was the first of its kind, while providing an overview of its contents, methodology, and reception.
Zusammenfassung
Georg Lorenz Bauer (1755–1806) ist dafür bekannt, dass er den Begriff »historisch-kritisch« prägte und eines der ersten Werke der alttestamentlichen Theologie verfasste. Er ist jedoch kaum in Erinnerung, weil er das wohl erste eigenständige Werk der alttestamentlichen Ethik veröffentlichte. Seine zweibändige Biblische Moral des Alten Testaments (1803) zählt bis heute zu den umfangreichsten Veröffentlichungen zu diesem Thema. Dieser Artikel ordnet Bauers Arbeit in der Geschichte der AT-Ethikforschung ein und argumentiert, dass sie die erste ihrer Art war, und bietet einen Überblick über ihre Inhalte, Methodik und Rezeption.

Georg Lorenz Bauer (1755–1806) est connu pour avoir inventé le terme »historico-critique« et écrit l’un des premiers ouvrages de théologie de l’Ancien Testament, mais on se souvient à peine de lui pour avoir publié ce qui est sans doute le premier ouvrage indépendant sur l’éthique de l’Ancien Testament. Sa Biblische Moral des Alten Testaments (1803) en deux volumes figure toujours parmi les publications les plus complètes sur le sujet. Cet article situe le travail de Bauer dans l’histoire de la recherche sur l’éthique de l’AT, affirmant qu’il s’agissait du premier du genre, tout en donnant un aperçu de son contenu, de sa méthodologie et de sa réception.
