»Humanismus« ist ein junger, offener – und daher umstrittener – Begriff. Hubert Cancik zeichnet in diesem Band die Wurzeln des Humanismus nach, die aus Konzepten bestehen, die in Philosophie und Kunst, Ethik und Politik, Wissenschaft und Recht der Antike entwickelt wurden. In von Brüchen und Verwerfungen gekennzeichneten Rezeptionsschüben sind diese in die europäische Geschichte eingegangen und haben beim Aufbau einer zivilen Gesellschaft und der Proklamation der Menschenrechte mitgewirkt. Deren Anspruch, Gemeingut aller Menschen zu sein, unabhängig von Ethnien, Religionen, Klassen und Machtmitteln, ist, so zeigt dieses Buch, die Basis eines kritischen Humanismus, also des Angebots, eine Welt-Gesellschaft menschlich zu denken.

Hubert Cancik (Prof. Dr. phil. Dr. h.c.) lehrte Klassische Philologie an der Universität Tübingen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die antike Kulturwissenschaft, die Geschichte der antiken Religionen sowie die Rezeption der Antike.
