After working as a conservator at the Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) in Abu Dhabi from 2008 to 2009, she became head of the conservation project “Schinkel’s Legacy” at the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Since 2012, she is employed as a conservator for modern and contemporary art on paper at the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin.

    Eva Hummert graduated from the Studiengang Konservierung und Restaurierung von Graphik, Archiv- und Bibliotheksgut at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart in 2007 and was acting head of the paper conservation lab of the programme until 2014. She was a scientific research assistant in a 2-year project headed by Dr. Andrea Pataki-Hundt about optimizing the consolidation with aerosols and examining the adhesive properties during consolidation. She obtained her Ph.D. in 2014 investigating the penetration behaviour of misted aqueous adhesives.

    and Irene Brückle

    Irene Brückle is professor and director of the Studiengang Konservierung und Restaurierung von Graphik, Archiv- und Bibliotheksgut at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart since 2008. Between 1990 and 2004, she taught at the Art Conservation Department, Buffalo State College and became professor in 1992. She holds an M.A. in art history from the University at Buffalo and a Ph.D. in art technology/art history from the Staatliche Akademie Stuttgart. From 2005 until 2008, she was head of conservation at the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Abstract

About 1400 works on paper in the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin were analysed for sheet dimensions and their aspect ratios and considered for storage- and handling-related damages. A new stacked enclosure system was developed for objects measuring up to 1350 × 950 mm to upgrade flat file storage, to reduce the risk of mechanical damage and improve the ease of handling in the museum study room and for exhibition preparation. Five defined standard dimensions for oversized artworks on paper and for enclosures and frames were introduced at the museum. They reflect the most common aspect ratios of 1:1.4 followed by 1:1.3. The new enclosure system consists of an outer shallow cardboard tray that holds up to five artworks enclosed in a folder. The folders are made either of cardboard, of a corrugated backboard and a cardboard cover, or of a corrugated backboard faced with museum board to which the object can be hinged; the latter serves as a mounting board for framing when the front cardboard cover is folded back. The trays are stackable. The corrugated cardboard walls of the tray retard the transfer of external relative humidity fluctuations into the stacked storage system.

Zusammenfassung

System für die Stapellagerung großformatiger Werke auf Papier

Es wurde ein Hüllsystem zur gestapelten Lagerung großformatiger Kunstwerke auf Papier (Maße bis zu 1350 × 950 mm) in Planschränken entwickelt. Rund 1400 Objekte aus der Sammlung des Kupferstichkabinetts, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Blattgrößen und Seitenverhältnisse analysiert sowie auf typische, durch die bisherige Lagerung und Handhabung verursachte Schadensbilder hin untersucht. Das Hüllsystem, das in Zusammenarbeit mit der Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart entwickelt wurde, reduziert mechanische Schäden und verbessert die Handhabung der Kunstwerke im Studiensaal und bei Ausstellungsvorbereitungen. Im Verlauf des Projekts wurden fünf neue Standardformate definiert und am Kupferstichkabinett eingeführt. Sie orientieren sich an den gängigsten Seitenverhältnissen von 1:1,4 gefolgt von 1:1,3. Das neue Hüllsystem besteht aus einem flachen, mittig vertieften Grafikbett, in das bis zu fünf Kunstwerke gelegt werden, die wiederum in einzelnen Mappen untergebracht sind. Diese Mappen können entweder aus einem flexiblen Archivkarton, aus einem Untersatz aus dünner Wellpappe und in einem Archivkarton als Deckel, oder aus einer mit Museumskarton kaschierter Wellpappe als Untersatz und einem Archivkarton als Deckel bestehen. Bei letzterer Variante kann das Objekt auf den Untersatz montiert werden. Die Mappe kann dann mit zurückgeklapptem Kartondeckel direkt in einen entsprechend standardisierten Rahmen eingesetzt werden. Die Grafikbetten können im Stapel aufbewahrt werden. Dabei verzögern die Rahmen aus Wellpappe die Übertragung von Feuchtigkeitsschwankungen aus der Umgebung in das Stapelinnere.

Resumé

Un système d´entreposage compact pour œuvres sur papier de grand format

Un système d´entreposage compact pour œuvres sur papier de grand format mesurant jusqu´à 1300 × 900 mm a été développé afin d´améliorer le système existant de meubles à plans. Environ 1400 œuvres de la collection du Kupferstichkabinett, musée national de Berlin ont été évaluées afin d´établir leurs dimensions et leurs rapports de mesures, ainsi que les dommages. Le système d´entreposage développé en collaboration avec l´Académie Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Stuttgart réduit les risques de dégâts mécaniques et facilite la manipulation de la collection, tant en salle d´étude et de consultation qu´en vue de la préparation d´expositions. Le rapport de mesures le plus souvent rencontré était de 1:1.4, suivi du rapport 1:1.3. Les œuvres ont été groupées selon les cinq formats choisis de cadres, en fonction de leur compatibilité visuelle avec le rapport de mesures. Le nouveau système d´entreposage est constitué de deux parties: le plateau extérieur est en carton d´archive ondulé mince mesurant 19 mm de hauteur et pouvant contenir cinq œuvres. Cet ensemble est enclos, soit dans une pochette cartonnée souple, soit dans une pochette plus rigide en carton ondulé mince avec une feuille de rabat en carton; soit dans une pochette de présentation construite en carton ondulé recouvert d´un carton de conservation sur lequel l´œuvres peut être montée. L´ensemble pouvant servir de montage de présentation et être encadré lorsque la feuille de rabat est rabattue à l´arrière. Les plateaux remplis peuvent être soulevé un par un pour être sorti du tiroir. Les parois des plateaux constituées de carton ondulé forment une barrière protectrice en cas de fluctuation du niveau d´Humidité Relative (HR), barrière qui retarde l´élévation de l´HR à l´intérieur de ce système clos.

Irene Brückle

    The paper object storage tray was developed in cooperation with Klug-Conservation, Immenstadt, Germany. It was constructed by the company and will be commercially available in the future. A predecessor was designed in the 1990s for the Albertina Museum, Vienna.
