Obituary: Jae-Il Kim (1936–2023)
We received the sad news that Prof. Dr. Jae-Il Kim passed away on 03.12.2023 at the age of 87 years.
Prof. Kim was a Member of the Advisory Board of Radiochimica Acta for many years.
He was the Founding Father of the international conference MIGRATION, which even today – 36 years after its establishment – is still the most important platform for scientific exchange on issues related to radionuclide migration in the environment with a focus on the disposal of radioactive waste in deep geological repositories. In total 11 special issues appeared in RCA as Conference Proceedings from 1987 to 2009, most of them coordinated by Prof. Jae-Il Kim as a Guest Editor. Moreover, he authored and co-authored almost 100 publications in RCA, in recognition of which he received the Golden Jubilee Award of the Journal.
Jae-Il Kim was Director of the Institute for Nuclear Waste Management (INE) at the former Research Centre Karlsruhe (now KIT) from 1991 until 2002. Prior to this, he held professorships in radio- and nuclear chemistry at the Technical University of Munich and at the KTH in Stockholm. For his outstanding scientific work he was awarded numerous prizes, e.g. the Günther Wirth Prize of the German Nuclear Society in 1990, the Korean Prime Minister’s Honorary Prize in 1986 and Honorary Citizenship of the city of Seoul in 1995.
We will not forget his pioneering scientific achievements in the field of radiochemistry and his constant commitment to supporting young scientists. We will always honour his memory. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family.
