Il contributo esamina (riferendosi ai volumi dei „Nuntiaturberichte aus Deutschland“ pubblicati di recente) la politica curiale durante la Guerra dei Trent’anni, in particolare nella sua fase svedese fino alla pace di Praga (1630–1635). Questi anni sono significativi, perché a partire dal 1633/34 si constata, da parte del governo imperiale, una disponibilità al compromesso decisamente maggiore in proposito del diritto religioso. Si pone il quesito di come la curia abbia valutato questo fatto. Le fonti considerate confermano i giudizi finora formulati dagli storici (tra gli altri Konrad Repgen e Robert Bireley) secondo cui la Curia era contraria a fare concessioni alla parte protestante sul piano confessionale. Appare però un secondo aspetto della politica condotta dalla Curia verso l’Impero, vale a dire una profonda diffidenza nei confronti dell’imperatore, sospettato di perseguire un accordo confessionale soprattutto per poter continuare a condurre, dopo una riconciliazione all’interno dell’Impero, la guerra contro la Francia con la stessa intensità. La Curia era evidentemente convinta che per la politica di Vienna fosse prioritaria l’unità della Casa d’Austria e la subordinazione agli interessi della Spagna. Nel complesso l’analisi mette in dubbio che la linea della Curia come attore politico indipendente nelle relazioni esterne europee fosse caratterizzata da un così forte contrasto tra le posizioni tese per principio alla salvaguardia del diritto da un lato e l’adozione di una politica flessibile dall’altro. Dal punto di vista della Curia la salvaguardia del diritto non sembra essere stato solo un fine in sé, come neppure l’agire politico in maniera flessibile era indipendente dall’osservanza di fondamentali principi di diritto. Qui si apre un campo di ricerche future che vanno ben oltre la politica curiale verso l’Impero e possono prendere importanti spunti dai volumi del carteggio dei nunzi ora pubblicati.

Abstract

This article examines the policies of the Curia during the Thirty Years War, particularly during the years prior to the Peace of Prague (1630–1635), by referring to the recently published volumes of the „Nuntiaturberichte aus Deutschland“. This period seems to be of particular significance because from 1633/34 onwards the imperial government displayed a far greater willingness to compromise on religious rights. This article poses the question of how the Curia interpreted this fact. The sources considered confirm the judgements hitherto formulated by historians (including Konrad Repgen and Robert Bireley), according to whom the Curia was opposed to making concessions to the Protestants. However, a second aspect of the Curia’s policies towards the Empire can be observed: a profound distrust of the emperor, suspected of pursuing a confessional agreement mainly to continue the war against France with undiminished intensity after reaching a reconciliation within the Empire. The Curia was evidently convinced that the priority for Vienna’s policy was the unity of the Casa d’Austria and subordination to the interests of Spain. Overall, the analysis challenges the idea that the course taken by the Curia, as an independent actor in European power politics, was characterized by a strong contrast between positions aimed at safeguarding rights ecclesiastical on the one hand and the adoption of a flexible policy on the other. From the perspective of the Curia the safeguard of rights does not seem to have been simply an end in itself, nor was acting politically flexible and irrespective of legal principles. This opens up a field of future studies that goes well beyond the Curia’s policies towards the Empire and for which the volumes of the correspondence of the nuncios now available can provide important impulses.
