Riassunto

Dopo una breve rassegna sull’edizione del carteggio dei nunzi da parte della storiografia di lingua tedesca, nonché una panoramica su temi centrali dei volumi di corrispondenza dei nunzi a Vienna relativi ai primi anni Trenta del XVII secolo, il contributo approfondisce i fulcri tematici, i possibili approcci analitici e la prospettiva di acquisire nuove cognizioni che i volumi relativi agli anni 1630/1635, e soprattutto l’ultimo volume apparso nel 2016, offrono alla ricerca storica per determinati campi tematici, spaziando dalla storia politica a quesiti storico-antropologici. Su queste basi si discute, infine, il problema, affrontato maggiormente a partire dagli anni Novanta del XX secolo, di quanto tali imprese editoriali siano ancora opportune. Si sottolinea che le fonti, edite in questo contesto, sono fondamentali per capire la politica europea durante una fase centrale della Guerra dei Trent’anni, non solo riguardo ai rapporti tra la Curia e l’Impero, ma anche relativo a tutto un ventaglio di problemi politici cruciali a livello europeo. In particolare emergono da esse in maniera efficace le origini della convinzione secondo cui un conflitto che interessava tutta Europa poteva essere ricomposto con successo solo attraverso trattative multilaterali e con il ricorso a mediatori della pace. Tale convinzione sarebbe diventato in seguito un elemento importante del sapere diplomatico europeo.

Abstract

This article opens with a brief discussion of the reports by the nuncios and their publication in the German-language historiography, and an overview of the central themes that can be found in the volumes of the correspondence of the nuncios at the imperial court covering the early 1630s. It then goes on to deal in depth with the key thematic issues, potential analytical approaches and the potential for acquiring new information that the volumes on the years 1630/1635, and especially the most recent volume published in 2016, offer to historical research in specific fields ranging from political history to historical and anthropological topics. Finally, this forms the basis for a discussion of the problem, tackled mainly from the 1990s onwards, of the extent to which such publishing initiatives are still opportune. It is stressed that the sources published in this context are fundamental for understanding European politics during a central phase of the Thirty Years War, not just as concerns relations between the Curia and the Empire, but a whole range of political issues crucial on the European level. Specifically, they illustrate the origins of the belief according to which a conflict encompassing the whole of Europe could be successfully resolved only thanks to multilateral negotiations and with recourse to peace mediators. This conviction later became an important factor in European diplomatic know-how.
