Dear readers,
In this issue we look at our microscopic-metallographic world from a greater distance with contributions by Roland Haubner from Vienna. The first contribution is about the "temporal" distance. He examines garment buttons from the barrow of the Hallstein period and draws important conclusions about the metallurgical capabilities of that
time and the metallic materials available as a result. In the commentary section of this issue, he also takes a "technical" distance, commenting on his personal view of the potential risks that could be taken by incorrect data and characterization techniques, as well as an oversized flood of publications. I think we agree that sometimes in interpretations of results the distinction between correlation and causality is not sharp enough. But I leave it to you to what extent you want to follow his linkages of science, psychology, but also religion and philosophy. In this case, other authors with publications on damage analysis and friction stir welding may offer you the balance.

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,
in diesem Heft betrachten wir mit Beiträgen von Roland Haubner aus Wien unsere mikroskopischmetallographische Welt auch einmal aus größerer Distanz. Im ersten Beitrag geht es um die „zeitliche“ Distanz. Er untersucht Gewandknöpfe aus dem Hügelgrab der Hallsteinzeit und zieht daraus wichtige Rückschlüsse
auf die metallurgischen Fähigkeiten dieser Zeit und die dadurch verfügbaren metallischen Werkstoffe. Im Kommentarteil dieses Heftes geht er auch „fachlich“ auf Distanz und kommentiert seine persönliche Sicht auf die möglichen Risiken, die durch falsche Daten und Charakterisierungstechniken sowie eine übergroße Publikationsflut eingegangen werden könnten. Ich denke, wir sind uns einig, dass manchmal in den Interpretationen der Ergebnisse die Unterscheidung von Korrelation und Kausalität nicht scharf genug erfolgt. Aber ich überlasse es Ihnen, inwieweit Sie seinen Verknüpfungen von Wissenschaft, Psychologie, aber auch Religion und Philosophie folgen wollen. In diesem Falle bieten Ihnen andere Autoren mit Publikationen zur Schadensanalyse und zum Reibrührschweißen ggf. den Ausgleich.
