Abstract

This contribution investigates how words denoting time of day (e.g. morning, Morgen) are used in Standard English and German. It presents a corpus analysis of such words in the British National Corpus and the similarly structured DWDS Kernkorpus, which correlates their use with the 24 hours of the day. Since the frame of reference is the same in the two languages, this parallel approach not only allows for a more precise temporal mapping of the word field of times of day than ever before, but it also permits an unprecedented comparison with regard to possible translation equivalents in English and German.
