Apokolokyntosis und De clementia: Neros Prinzipat und Senecas Kommentar

Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag untersucht den historischen Kontext der von Seneca verfassten Schriften Apokolokyntosis und De clementia und seinen Niederschlag in den Texten. Beide Werke wurden in einer Phase politischer Unsicherheit und hoher Spannungen verfasst. Es wird die These vertreten, dass diese angespannte Situation sich in den Texten spiegelt. Der Verfasser sah Nero offenbar bereits unmittelbar nach seiner Thronbesteigung kritisch und versuchte ihn nicht nur in De clementia, sondern auch in der Apokolokyntosis auf den Senat und seine Ideale zu verpflichten sowie eindringlich zu warnen. Gleichzeitig war Seneca offenbar darum bemüht, vor seinen senatorischen Standesgenossen seine Nähe zum princeps zu rechtfertigen.

Summary

This paper examines the historical context of Seneca’s Apokolokyntosis and De clementia and its reflection in the texts. Both works were written during a period of political uncertainty and high tension. It is argued that this tense situation is reflected in the texts. The author apparently saw Nero critically already immediately after his accession to the throne and tried to commit him not only in De clementia but also in the Apokolokyntosis to the senate and its ideals as well as to warn him forcefully. At the same time, Seneca was apparently concerned to justify his closeness to the princeps before his senatorial peers.
