Wann eroberte Mithridates die Provinz Asia?

Zusammenfassung

Die 1890 von Reinach aufgestellte Chronologie der Ereignisse beim Ausbruch des Ersten Mithridatischen Krieges wurde über 80 Jahre lang nicht hinterfragt, ehe sie von Badian und Sherwin-White zu Recht widerlegt wurde. Worüber die beiden Forscher keine Einigkeit erzielten, ist, ob Mithridates die römische Provinz Asia vor oder nach dem Winter 89/88 v. Chr. eroberte. Der Zweck dieses Artikels ist es, diese Frage zu klären. Da die antiken Quellen uns nicht explizit sagen, wo der Winter in der Reihenfolge der Ereignisse zu platzieren ist, muss man die Erzählung der antiken Autoren, ebenso wie die Argumente der modernen Historiker, genau überprüfen. Das Ergebnis ist, dass Mithridates die Provinz Asia höchstwahrscheinlich nicht vor dem Winter erobert hat.

Summary

The chronology of the events at the outbreak of the First Mithridatic War developed by Reinach in 1890 remained unquestioned for more than 80 years until it was rightly refuted by Badian and Sherwin-White. What these two scholars disagreed about is whether Mithridates occupied the Roman province of Asia before or after the winter of 89/88 BC. This article’s purpose is to examine this question. As the ancient sources do not explicitly tell us where this winter should be placed in the order of events, it is necessary to scrutinise the narrative of the ancient authors, as well as the arguments put forward by modern historians. The conclusion is that it is most probable that Mithridates did not occupy the province of Asia before the winter.
