Nuove prove per la datazione di Vegezio sotto Teodosio II e la sua collocazione nell’impero romano d’Oriente

Riassunto

Nell’ambito degli studi su Vegezio la datazione dell’Epitoma rei militaris e l’identificazione dell’anonimo imperatore sono questioni lungamente dibattute e approdate a varie soluzioni; Teodosio I ora costituisce la dottrina vulgata. Nessuno ha mai messo in dubbio la pertinenza di Vegezio all’impero romano d’Occidente. Il presente articolo parte dai risultati innovativi di un precedente studio, dove si dimostra che Vegezio scrisse l’Epitoma nell’impero romano d’Oriente intorno al 435 e la dedicò a Teodosio II. Qui l’appartenenza di Vegezio all’impero romano d’Oriente e l’identificazione del destinatario con Teodosio II vengono ulteriormente corroborate, ma si propone una datazione leggermente più alta, più precisamente verso il 425.

Summary

The date and the addressee of Vegetius’ Epitoma rei militaris are two controversial issues; now a large consensus seems to have been reached on the times and the person of Theodosius I. Classical scholars unquestioningly agree that the author wrote in the Western Empire. Challenging those points of view, a recent article sets forth three different suggestions. As to ‘when’, about AD 435. As to ‘who’, Theodosius II. As to ‘where’, the Eastern Empire. Here nine passages from the Epitoma are adduced and examined to prove further the soundness of the new theory, but another answer is given to ‘when’, namely about AD 425. These hypotheses also fit three passages of the Mulomedicina. Moreover, an educated guess is made about Vegetius’ office.
