Ingannevoli come monete false. I κίβδηλοι χρησμοί in Erodoto
Summary:
Herodotus uses the adjective κίβδηλος only three times in order to refer to a misleading prophecy of the Delphic oracle. Once, that is the episode of the Spartan liberation of Athens from the tyrants (V, 91), the deceit is clear because we are told that the Pythia was corrupted. The other two occurrences, i. e. the prophecy the Spartans receive about the conquest of the Arcadia and the one that Croesus obtains about the Persians, are more problematic, but in both cases the expansionism of the characters have a catastrophic outcome. The analysis of the occurrences of κίβδηλος in previous, contemporary or slightly later texts shows the extremely negative meaning of this adjective: a fraudulent alteration of the reality is often implied. Traces of disillusion emerge from the narration: people that are anxious to possess always more and more clash with the intrigues of the Delphic god and are finally forced to face the difficulty to know in advance what only the experience can teach.

Solo in tre occasioni e sempre a proposito di responsi delfici Erodoto utilizza l'aggettivo κίβδηλος per indicare un vaticinio fuorviante. Se nel caso dei responsi dati ai Lacedemoni per la liberazione di Atene dai tiranni l'inganno è dichiarato perché è frutto della corruzione della Pizia (V, 91), nell'episodio dell'interrogazione oracolare degli Spartani sulla conquista dell'Arcadia (I, 66) e in quello di Creso sulla spedizione contro la Persia (I, 75) la questione è più complessa. In entrambi i casi però l'espansionismo dei protagonisti ha un esito catastrofico. L'analisi delle occorrenze di κίβδηλος precedenti, contemporanee o di poco successive alle „Storie“ rivela il valore semantico negativo che caratterizza tale aggettivo: un'operazione fraudolenta di alterazione della realtà viene spesso sottintesa. Tracce di disincanto emergono dall'opera: gli uomini che si affannano a possedere sempre di più sono infine costretti a scontrarsi con le trame del dio di Delfi e ad ammettere la difficoltà di sapere prima ciò che soltanto l'esperienza può insegnare.
