Abstract
Several treatment strategies based in ozone and hydrogen peroxide (single, catalytic ozonation over Mn-Ce-O and Fe2O3 - MnOx as well as O3+H2O2, homogeneous (Fe2+) and heterogeneous (Fe-Ce-O) Fenton’s processes) were tested for the depuration of three real streams (olive mill - OMW, detergent - DW and milk whey wastewater - MWW). The lowest depuration efficiencies were attained by single ozonation with 11%, 7% and 52% of COD abated for OMW, DW and MWW. The presence of solid catalysts improved ozone action, but their stability was compromised for DW and MWW. Homogeneous Fenton’s was efficient for all the effluents with 71%, 21% and 96% of COD removed. The catalyst Fe-Ce-O is able to surpass the drawback associated to dissolved iron in the classical Fenton’s regarding OMW; nevertheless it led to a less biodegradable DW effluent. Ozone+H2O2 totally depurated MWW. Considering the efficiency results with the costs estimation it seems advisable to treat OMW, DW and MWW with H2O2+Fe-Ce-O, H2O2+Fe2+ and O3+H2O2, respectively.
