Abstract

The aim of our research was to evaluate treatment efficiency of Fenton’s process and ozonation for the treatment of two landfill leachates (fresh and mature), both resulting from municipal waste disposal. Both samples had high organic load (COD of the fresh and mature landfill leachate were 2700 and 490 mg·L-1, respectively), high toxicity and low biodegradability (BOD5/COD bellow 0.5). These were the reasons why oxidative treatment has been proposed. The first choice was Fenton´s treatment, due to its fast reaction rate. It was optimised in 250 mL reactor using different Fe2+ (0.3/1.5 M) and H2O2 (1.0/3.0 M) concentrations and ratios to achieve the best performance. Maximal organics removal reached more than 50% according to COD removal. Efficiency of treatment was confirmed by biodegradability and toxicity testing. The second set of oxidation experiments employed ozonation. The efficiency of initial organics removal with ozone was about 70% for mature leachate, while in the case of fresh leachate only 41% of COD was removed. No significant improvement of the biodegradability of the landfill leachates was achieved using this treatment procedure.
