Some Contours for Public Theology in South Africa

Abstract
This article argues in favour of a critical and constructive public theology that reflects upon the role of Christian faith in public life in the young South African democracy and in other democratic societies. It offers some crucial contours for the development of public theology. It first calls attention to different approaches to and emphases in public theology. With different emphases and methodologies the three central questions of public theology are addressed regarding the inherent public nature of God's love for the world, the public rationality of this love, and the public implications of God's love for the world. Second, public theology is described as an intradisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scholarly practice. Third, the possibilities of what public theology might become are discussed, namely a theological discipline, subdiscipline, research field, organiser of curriculum, catalyst, or a new contextual theology. In two final sections, the publics of public theology and the contemporary agenda of public theology are discussed.
Zusammenfassung
Dieser Aufsatz argumentiert für eine kritische und konstruktive Öffentliche Theologie (public theology), die die Rolle des christlichen Glaubens im öffentlichen Leben der jungen südafrikanischen Demokratie und anderer demokratischer Gesellschaften reflektiert. Er offeriert einige wesentliche Konturen für die Entwicklung einer solchen Öffentlichen Theologie. Zuerst richtet er die Aufmerksamkeit auf die verschiedenen Ansätze und Schwerpunkte innerhalb Öffentlicher Theologie. Denn auch die drei wesentlichen Fragen Öffentlicher Theologie werden mit unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten und Methoden gestellt: die inhärente öffentliche Natur der göttlichen Liebe für die Welt, die öffentliche Rationalität dieser Liebe sowie die öffentlichen Auswirkungen dieser göttlichen Liebe für die Welt. In einem zweiten Schritt wird Öffentliche Theologie als intra-, interund transdisziplinäre wissenschaftliche Praxis beschrieben. Drittens werden die Möglichkeiten der zukünftigen Entwicklung der Öffentlichen Theologie diskutiert, im Sinne einer theologischen Disziplin, Subdisziplin, eines Forschungsbereichs, als curriculares Organisationsprinzip, als Katalysator oder als neue Form kontextueller Theologie. Schließlich werden einerseits die Öffentlichkeiten einer solchen Öffentlichen Theologie sowie andererseits ihre gegenwärtige Agenda diskutiert.
