Theology in French-Speaking Quebec (Canada): Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Abstract
The report presents the evolution of practical theology in the francophone province of Quebec, as well as in the city of Ottawa (Canada). It sketches the historical context of the last half-century in terms of society, Church, and academia. The main features of the theological faculties are evoked and the contributions of individual theologians over the last 10 years are summarized. Quebec’s example illustrates the difficulty for practical theology to maintain its position in government-funded universities, at the service of both Church and society, in a context which has become highly secularized and which provides religion as a whole with bad press.

Der Forschungsbericht stellt die Entwicklung praktischer Theologie in Kanadas französischsprachiger Provinz Quebec und in Ottawa vor. Ihr gesellschaftlicher, kirchlicher und akademischer Kontext der letzten 50 Jahre wird zu diesem Zweck ebenso umrissen wie die Charakteristika der dortigen theologischen Fakultäten und die Forschungsschwerpunkte der dort ansässigen Forscher/innen. Der Fall Quebecs steht beispielhaft für die Schwierigkeiten Praktischer Theologie, in staatlichen Universitäten und im Kontext öffentlicher Skepsis gegenüber Religion ihre Präsenz zu sichern und den Dienst an Kirche und Gesellschaft fortzuführen.
