Caring for people with dementia: a sign of the kingdom

Abstract
Dementia is a degenerative disease which appears to take away personhood and identity and calls into question how we understand what it means to be a person. The author argues that how people with dementia are seen and imagined is key both to the understanding of their value and the care that is offered.This paper examines what theology might offer to person-centred care and offers some thoughts that may in time form a fully worked out theology of care.The qualitative research that forms the basis for this paper was conducted by the author within a group of care homes run by a faith-based organisation, Methodist Homes (MHA) in order to gain insights into care and how that might be influenced by the ethos of the organisation.
Zusammenfassung
Demenz ist eine degenerative Erkrankung, die den Erkrankten scheinbar das Menschsein und die Identität nimmt und unser Verständnis von Menschsein in Frage stellt. Die Autorin behauptet, dass die Art wie Menschen mit Demenz angesehen werden, der Schlüssel zum Verständnis ihres Werts und der geleisteten Pflege ist. Der Artikel untersucht, was Theologie zu einer patientenzentrierten Pflege beitragen könnte, und stellt einige vorläufige Gedanken zu einer Theologie der Pflege an. Die qualitative Forschung, die diesem Artikel zu Grunde liegt, wurde von der Autorin in einer Gruppe von Pflegeheimen durchgeführt, die von der religiösen Organisation Methodist Homes (MHA) geleitet werden, um einen Einblick zu gewinnen, ob die Werte der Organisation einen Einfluss auf die Pflege haben.
