Abstract
The present study covers aloe vera biodiesel (AVBD) production from the extracted aloe vera (AV) oil followed by their performance and emission study in the presence of SiO2 additive with diesel engine (DE). The maximum biodiesel yield of 94 % was obtained with catalyst dose (1.4 g), Methanol/Oil ratio (1:4), Time (120 min) and Temperature (60 °C). The effect of AVBD and fossil diesel (FD) based blending mixtures (BM) containing 20 % BD with variable concentration of SiO2 (0–100 ppm) has been used in the DE performance study. Five different BM containing 0, 25, 50, 75 & 100 ppm SiO2 named as BM0, BM25 BM50, BM75, and BM100 respectively have been tested in DE. The prepared fuels have been tested on DE in terms of BTE, BSFC, EGT. Emissions study in terms of CO, CO2, HC, and NOx concentration in the flue gas. The results reveal that for BM100, BTE and EGT increased by 14.73 and 11.96 % compared to BM0, but BSFC decreased by 14.25 %. Emissions such as HC and CO decreased by 26.38 and 25 %. But CO2 and NOx increased by 9.8 and 46.15 % for BM100 compared to FD. Overall, the presence of SiO2 in the BM increases the DE performance with enhanced emission characteristics.
