It is a great pleasure for me to publish this special issue of Green Processing and Synthesis, dedicated to the 2nd International Conference on Green Chemistry and Sustainable Engineering (GreenChemSE), held in Rome, Italy, from 20th to 22nd July, 2016.

This was the second of a series of biannual academic conferences and was aimed to create an international forum for researchers and scientists from around the world to discuss new results regarding the soundest issues related to environmentally friendly and sustainable physico-chemical processes.

Over 220 communications from 34 different countries attended to GreenChemSE16, including 150 posters, 70 selected oral communications and two plenary talks. Most presentations were based on high-quality original papers covering a wide range of topics, such as novel synthetic methodologies and methods, green energy production, chemicals from renewables, industrial green procedures, alternative solvents, renewable and recyclable materials and green chemistry for safe water.

This special issue includes some of the selected papers presented at the conference. The papers that successfully passed the reviewing process of the journal are now published in this special issue. A relatively short number (11) of selected and interesting papers are here presented.

I would like to dedicate this special issue to the memory of Professor Anabela de Sousa Oliveira, PhD, who was the president of this conference and attended even though she was seriously ill at the time. Unfortunately she died on September 23, 2016. She will always have an important place in this international conference. I would also like to express my gratitude to the editors of Green Processing and Synthesis for the efforts in realizing this special issue, particularly to Mrs. Jannelies Smit.
