There is growing pressure for low carbon sources of energy which will not unduly raise the cost of electricity bills. Several technologies are being investigated including the use of biomass as a gasification feedstock and improved means of carbon capture. Europe is especially vulnerable because it has not yet found and demonstrated an exploitable and environmentally comfortable source of natural gas from fracking.

New Horizons in Gasification (incorporating the 12th European Gasification conference) will be held in the Port of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, which is a major entry and exit point for European energy and is the biggest European coal importer.

The conference is an excellent platform to promote the benefits of gasification, its application, the environment and economic appeal and new applications for this traditional technology against current challenges.

Conference programme themes

  • New Developments in Gasification

  • Novel Technologies

  • Gasification and Energy from Waste and Biomass

  • New Concepts and Opportunities for Gasification

Pre-conference workshop: introduction to gasification

The morning workshop will provide an introduction to key concepts in gasification while the afternoon session will consist of a series of brief expert presentations on the subject of: carbon capture and storage and gasification using sustainable feed-stocks (waste, biomass).

Post-conference workshop – syngas utilisation: beyond ammonia

The workshop will examine some existing, new and novel uses of syngas in the production of methanol, small olefins, oxygenates and Fischer-Tropsch fuels as well as potential conversion to higher value products via microbial routes.

Workshops can be attended as part of the full conference or as standalone activity.

Keynote speakers

Dr. Rob Stikkelman, Director, Center for Port Innovation and Regional Development, Rotterdam.

Brian Ricketts, Secretary General EURACOAL aisbl (European Association for Coal and Lignite).

Dr. Andrew Minchener OBE, General Manager, IEA Clean Coal Centre.

Dr. Jeff Chapman, Former chief executive of CCSA (Carbon Capture and Storage Association) – after dinner speaker.
