Implementation of Microreactor Technology in Biotechnology (IMTB 2013)

Microreactor technology has proven itself as a new paradigm in science and technology. In the past two decades, it has uncovered new scientific challenges and solutions in a broad range of areas, such as electronics, medical technology, and fuel production and processing, as well as in chemical industry, environmental protection, and, last but not least, biotechnology. The latter has been the subject of interest of the International Implementation of Microreactor Technology in Biotechnology (IMTB) Conference, which provides an opportunity for professionals from the academia and the industry to share and discuss the recent achievements in the field of microreactor technology with the focus on its implementation in biotechnology.

The first IMTB 2010 Conference (http://imtb2010.fkkt.uni-lj.si/), which was held in September 2010 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, has brought together experts of various backgrounds, including chemical engineers, biotechnologists, electrical and mechanical engineers, and chemists and biochemists, who presented their work to more than 100 participants from 11 countries. This success has spurred the collaborative research groups from the University of Ljubljana and the University of Zagreb to organize the next conference with even higher ambitions.

The IMTB 2013 Conference will be organized under the auspices of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and the Section on Applied Biocatalysis of the European Federation of Biotechnology. We are pleased to announce the following plenary and keynote speakers:

  • Prof. Goran N. Jovanović from Oregon State University and Microproducts Breakthrough Institute, United States;

  • Prof. Volker Hessel from Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands;

  • Prof. John Woodley from Technical University of Denmark, Denmark;

  • Prof. Krist Gernaey from Technical University of Denmark, Denmark;

  • Prof. Bernd Nidetzky from Technical University of Graz, Austria; and

  • Dr. Nicolas Szita from University College London, United Kingdom,

and the IMTB 2013 Conference is still in the process of inviting some prominent experts from the field.

Furthermore, several oral presentations of interesting research results and practical applications will be selected among the submitted abstracts, which will be allocated in four sessions:

  • Enzymatic Microreactors (Multiphase Systems, Enzyme Immobilization, Kinetic Studies, and Multistep Enzymatic Reactions),

  • Cells Within Microstructured Devices (Microbioreactors for Cell Culturing, Whole-Cell Biotransformations Within Microreactors, Microfluidic High-Throughput Screening, Cell Analysis, and Stem Cells),

  • Analysis Within Microstructured Devices (Analysis of Biomolecules, Medical Diagnostics, Microarrays, and μTAS), and

  • Process Intensification and Integration (Process Intensification, Downstream Processing, Lab-On-A-Chip, Process Modelling, and Microreactor Technology across the scales).

The deadline for abstract submission is on 21 December 2012. Abstracts should be sent by e-mail to . The selected papers from the Conference will be invited for publication in a special issue of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Quarterly, which will be published in winter 2013/2014.

The IMTB 2013 Conference will be held from 5 to 8 May 2013 at the Congress Centre of the Hotel Croatia in the Croatian seacoast town Cavtat, located just 15 km south of Dubrovnik. The Cavtat area is known for its lush Mediterranean vegetation and unpolluted sea as well as for a very attractive mixture of old and new architecture. Dubrovnik, the city of a unique political and cultural history, inscribed on the List of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, is one of the most attractive and famous cities of the Mediterranean. Its rich history and cultural heritage will be discovered within the Conference’s social programme.
