Abstract

Whereas the 1.5 Chinese-American children in the ‘American-acculturated’ immigrant families are privileged to enjoy their individual freedom and self-esteem, the children in the ‘Chinese-acculturated’ families are, to a great extent, deprived of the privilege. The latter group of children is found to be raised in ways that regularly downplay the significance of their individualism, and uphold epistemic and power differentiation amongst the kin members in the families. Conflicting with the mainstream ideology of egalitarianism in the U.S., the value of hierarchy (habitually practiced in the ‘Chinese-acculturated’ immigrant families) is concluded to account for frequent familial battles in Chinese-American households by the prior quantitative-oriented literature. To qualitatively inform public dialogue on kinship relationship in Chinese-American households, this paper integrates the theoretical frameworks of conversation analysis and ethnography of communication to meticulously demonstrate ways in which (1) harmonious kinship is naturalistically practiced in ‘Chinese-acculturated’ immigrant families, and (2) hostile kinship is habitually orchestrated in ‘American-acculturated’ families.
