Abstract

This article reviews the evidence for an Etruscan kiln (Structure K) at Cetamura del Chianti, for which the author directed excavations on the site from 1993 to 1997. Following a brief introduction as to location and history, the discussion turns to particulars of the kiln: size, stone and ceramic composition, description of firing chamber, and fuel used in firing. The last section discusses the religious rituals associated with the kiln and artifacts found in and near the kiln, including fragments inscribed with the names of two Etruscan gods associated with luck and fortune, Lur and Leinth. The usage of the kiln may be dated to the third century BCE, and perhaps also to the early second century.

Acknowledgement

I wish thank my former professor, colleague, and good friend, Nancy T. de Grummond, for her guidance, encouragement, and enthusiastic support over the many years of our collaboration at Cetamura.
