In this issue of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM) publishes a Letter to the Editor entitled “Great need for changes in higher education in Greece” [1]. The letter by Ioannis Bakoyiannis and Colleagues is unusual as regrades the aims and scope of this journal. However, we decided to publish it for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, education and research are the basis of any scientific journal and therefore, CCLM should strive to emphasize the need to preserve the efforts and investments to promote education and research for future generations. Second, the economic crisis did not affect Greece exclusively, but many other countries, and particularly in Europe the phenomenon of “Brain Drain” is affecting not only Greece, but Italy, Spain and many other countries as well. As CCLM is the official journal of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM), the paper by Bakoyiannis and Collegues is of interest for the broader readership of this journal and should raise further intitiatives and debates on this issue, promoted by the EFLM. Third, we would like to emphasize, once again, the need for promoting meritocracy and excellence in all medical schools and academic centers to maintain and increase the quality of scientific publications.
