Jean Mollion joined the French Education Program for Africa after graduating from University of Paris in 1969. He worked as a marine biology teacher successively at the School of Oceanography in Dakar, Senegal, University of Tulear, Madagascar and University of La Réunion, Reunion Island. He has participated in several seaweed valorization programs in Africa and Madagascar. Initiated Kappaphycus cultivation on ropes in SW Madagascar and the feasibility of production of the species on an industrial scale. Field work alternates with structural studies on carrageenan at the L.C.V.A. of University of Lille, France where he obtained his PhD on isolation of a new carrageenan, the omega type. His main interest today is the identification of new tropical carrageenophytes and agarophytes.

Abstract

A preliminary survey of the economic seaweed exploitation in Madagascar was published in 1998. The present study is an update of the situation after the large scale development of Eucheumatoid cultivation in this country. It represents a floristic survey and it includes more seaweed species than previously described. The economic impact of this new and promising source of income on the local population is also discussed.
