First report of the invasive macroalga Acrothamnion preissii (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) in the Atlantic Ocean

    Daniela Gabriel obtained a degree in plant biology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and a PhD in marine biology from the University of the Azores (Portugal). In 2011, she started her posdoctoral research project, which is focused on the Phylogeny of the red algae belonging to the Peyssonneliales. She is also interested in studying morphological and developmental features that help distinguishing the members of species-complexes, especially among algal taxa involving alternation of generation between gelatinous and crustose phases. Her other areas of interest are biodiversity and ecological monitoring.

    Joana Micael has obtained her PhD in marine ecology from the University of the Azores (Portugal) in 2011. Her research has been focused on marine bio-invasions and has ever since contributed to the Azorean regional projects on non-indigenous species.

    Andrea Z. Botelho obtained a degree in biology, a Master’s degree in management and nature conservation, and a PhD in marine sciences from the University of the Azores (Portugal). Her research has been developed in the fields of biology and marine ecology, environmental and regional planning. She also has research interests in marine biodiversity, environmental management and monitoring, marine protected areas and marine spatial planning. At present, she is a postdoc at the Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO) in the Azores.

    Enric Ballesteros is a researcher at Centre d’Estudis Avançats de Blanes, Catalonia. His research focuses in the description and functioning of shallow marine and freshwater benthic ecosystems dominated by macrophytes. Introduced macroalgae and their effects on marine ecosystems is one of his main areas of research.

    David Milla completed his double Bachelor’s degrees in marine sciences and environmental sciences at the University of Cadiz in 2013. He has since worked in the CIBIO-Azores and CCMAR-Algarve. He currently works in IMAR-MARE, Azores. His work has largely focused on conservation and management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). For the last 4 years, David has been dedicated to the taxonomy and ecology of macroalgae. His current project involves defining biotopes based on algal composition, with the goal to characterize and reinforce conservation objectives of MPAs.

He started his research investigation in 2010 in a genetics laboratory in Lisbon. In the University of the Azores, his research his research has been developed in marine genetics, focus on macroalgae. He is interested in studying marine ecology, morphological features of macroalgae and developing new genetics techniques in the field.

Abstract

Acrothamnion preissii is an invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea, and is listed among the 100 worst non-indigenous species. In July and August 2009, this non-native red macroalga was found for the first time in the Azores (on Santa Maria), and this represents the first record of this species in the Atlantic. Here, we describe the establishment of this invasive species in the Atlantic. In recent surveys, A. preissii displayed an invasive behaviour. As suggested for the Mediterranean Sea, hull fouling is the most likely vector for its introduction into the Azores.
