Recent progress in orexin/hypocretin physiology and pharmacology

  • Jyrki P. Kukkonen

Jyrki P. Kukkonen received his MSc in 1993 and in 1997 his PhD in biochemistry at Åbo Akademi University (Turku, Finland). He moved to the Deparment of (Medical) Physiology at Uppsala University (Uppsala, Sweden), where he remained for almost 10 years, first as a post-doctoral fellow and then as an independent researcher and group leader. In 2006, he returned to Åbo Akademi University as a professor in cell and molecular biology, and from there he transfered to his current position as professor of veterinary cell and molecular biology at the University of Helsinki (Helsinki, Finland) in 2007. Kukkonen’s work has mainly concentrated on pharmacology and signal transduction of G-proteincoupled receptors. He has worked with orexins since 1999, and orexin receptor signaling and orexin physiology still remain his major research interest, in addition to the general themes of G-protein-coupled receptor signaling, especially in connection with lipid messengers.
